How Your Dentist Can Help You Get A Brilliant Smile

How our teeth look makes an impression on other people. If you have stained or discolored teeth people tend to stare at your mouth rather than look you in the eyes when you are talking to them. That tends to make us self conscious about smiling, laughing or even talking. Through the use of cosmetic dentistry dentists can help give you a brilliant smile, as well as help you keep that smile once you have received it.

Here are some ways that your dentist can help you get that brilliant smile that you deserve.

Teeth whitening:

This is also called bleaching. It is the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure; in fact the number of people who are using it is growing by 15-20% a year. Teeth whitening is offered at almost every dentist office. It involves both work done at home and at the dentist's office, the work is done with a tooth whitening system. It is used to brighten stained, discolored or dull looking teeth. Most people who use this procedure are people who use tobacco, have a high caffeine intake, are older in age so their teeth have lost their bright look, and people who have perhaps injured a tooth and it has turned gray.

Veneers:

Veneers are used to correct chipped, cracked or worn out teeth and discolored teeth. Veneers are really thin tooth coverings. They are made out of porcelain or composite materials and are glued to the front of your teeth. Veneers are used to correct teeth that are crooked or oddly shaped, chipped, have pits or small holes, uneven or unwanted spaces, or that are so badly discolored that bleaching will not correct it.

Dental implants:

Implants are fake tooth roots that are surgically screwed into your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth in place. Implants are used to replace missing teeth, but in order to have an implant you have to have enough bone left to be able to screw the implant in. You can get dental implants if you have one or more missing teeth. So while it is a great alternative to bridges and dentures, it is not for everybody.

Teeth cleaning:

While professional cleaning will not bleach your teeth it will help get rid of unsightly plaque and tartar build up. By getting your teeth professional cleaned at least twice a year your dentist can also cleans off the superficial stains from some foods.

While these are just some of the procedures that dentists can use to help give you a brilliant smile, there is stuff that you can do to help your dentist give you that brilliant smile.

Over-the-counter teeth whiteners:

While over the counter teeth whiteners are not as strong as the ones you receive in your dental office they will help to keep your teeth white once you have them professionally whitened. They will also work instead of teeth whitening, but the results will take longer.

Avoiding and/or limiting:

By avoiding or limiting your intake of foods and beverages that stain your teeth, you can help to keep that brilliant smile longer. Foods that are dark in color like blueberries and dark sodas, as well as coffee and teas can actually cause stains to return in as little as a month, by avoiding or limiting your intake of these you can slow down or stop those reoccurring stains.

Good oral hygiene:

By brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, you can help to keep your teeth clean, which will help you maintain that brilliant smile. It will also help to ensure that your gums and teeth remain healthy and strong.

Remember once your dentist gives you that brilliant smile, it is your job to maintain it.
