I Was Born Without Teeth And I'm Going To Die Without Teeth

I was born without teeth and I'm going to die without teeth, is what my patient's husband responded when we casually asked him if he wanted to be seen also. Although not to the same extreme, the underlying reasoning in his response is very common.

We are living in a society that thinks we are so advanced technologically that anything can be fixed or repaired and all will be well in a quick visit to the dentist.

I'll just pull up to the drive thru window and take some teeth to go. Indifference and procrastination are the worst enemies for both the patient and the dental care provider. Dental care is not clear cut, there are many gray areas. Numerous things need to happen just right, in order to have a successful outcome. The more destruction the mouth has suffered the lower the chances a dental care provider has of restoring your teeth to full function and chewing efficacy.

It always amazes me how many patients come into my office requesting for all their teeth to be removed and have a full denture (false teeth) made to replace them so that they don't have to worry about their teeth anymore. They are right in one sense; they no longer have to worry about their natural teeth. Now they have something new to worry about. Dentures are some of the most uncomfortable and inefficient prosthetic devices that exist. They get loose with time and you end up resorting to using messy adhesives to keep them from dropping down while laughing or even just yawning. The plastic denture teeth chip and break off all the time. The denture body itself also commonly breaks into pieces. Dentures also cause a person to have increased incidence of bad breath, and if that's not enough to convince you, quality dentures are not cheap.

A person's mentality has to change in order to prevent the total loss of their teeth and eventual replacement with dentures. If you were to ask anyone with a pair of dentures in their mouth they would tell you that if they could do it all over again they would save their natural teeth for as long as possible and try to mend them as they break with usage. But, as the saying goes, Hindsight is twenty/twenty.
